Spectators filled the stands and racers were propped beneath their hoods as the track buzzed to life. Girls walked by in booty shorts and tank tops with high heeled shoes. Bailey was covered in comparison. I wouldn’t have to pummel some guys face for looking at my girl the wrong way later.

She stepped out of the Nova in a constant state of awe. I loved watching her take it all in. She walked at turtle pace. I knew she was committing the scene to memory. I was the lucky one. I squeezed her hand tight. The most gorgeous girl at the track was mine.

“Hey, guys,” Alexa said as her and Jeremy made their way over. Jeremy nodded and Alexa locked her arm in Bailey’s as we made our way to the bleachers.

Wes was talking to someone in the announcer’s booth. He came over when he noticed us. “You made it,” we shook hands. “Mind if I borrow your girl?” She raised her eyebrows and I motioned for her to go.

“We’re getting seats.” Alexa and Jeremy went ahead.

I hung back to watch Bailey. Wes introduced her to several of the drivers who were prepping. She had a ridiculous grin on her face and animated her hands when she talked. “I know.” I stopped and turned her toward me, so I could button her shirt. “I also noticed what the boys were looking at.”

“Does it really matter, Ry?” She stood on the tips of her toes and pecked my cheek. “I’m only yours. Now, let’s get our seats.”

We sat in the front row next to Alexa and Jeremy. Bay’s leg bounced against mine as she bit her nails. Her gaze was glued to the track. When the first cars pulled into the staging area, she stood up and sat down just as fast. They approached the burnout area. She positioned her hands on her upper thighs and leaned forward.

By the time they lined up and waited on the Christmas tree, she was on the edge of her seat. The three amber lights came on.

One, two, three.

Green. They sped off. Bay prayed. After the two cars traveled the quarter mile and a winner was announced, she jumped to her feet and cheered with the rest of the crowd.

“This is amazing,” she grasped the railing and studied the track.

The breeze blew the hair around her shoulders and she smiled over at me. The earth stopped spinning. Her passion for life poured out of her every pore. My heartrate accelerated. The world was waiting for her. It scared the crap out of me. Would I be enough in her
